Buy more stuff, responsibly

Posted: Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

Everyone enjoys shopping and finding unique treasures to keep or give away as gifts, but the items that we buy usually do not reflect the real price. The real price of an item would reflect the cost of gathering the raw materials which can be economic, ecological, and social. Our natural resources are invaluable, but they are often exploited for short gains and leave lasting marks on the environment.

Fair trade businesses offer community members jobs, training, a safe work environment, and a fair living wage. These businesses support the economic and social health of local communities while sustaining the world’s desire to shop.

Two fair trade businesses that support global artisans and communities are A Greater Gift and Ten Thousand Villages. If you are looking for finely made basketry, jewelery, or musical instruments look through these websites and support our global economy.
