Car Sharing

Posted: Friday, March 21st, 2008

Jonah and I had a VW Jetta TDI last year that we ran on bio-diesel and got incredible gas mileage with, but most of the time the car just sat in our driveway while we rode our bikes around town. It was an expensive luxury that we decided we could go without so we sold it last fall. Since then we’ve been biking, bussing, and using his parents’ extra vehicle when we have lots of errands.

Recently, we both joined a local car sharing program organized by Community Car. How it works: members reserve one of the 15 cars located around the city and pay an hourly rate. Individuals and organizations have access to high gas mileage and hybrid electric vehicles 24 hours a day without the worries of paying high car maintenace, insurance, and fuel costs.

We think this is a great solution to our global transportation issues, and would like to see more people kick their car habits. The world’s automobile addiction is creating mass amounts of carbon dioxide which is a great harm to our environment and poisoning the air that we breathe. Also, because people are so dependent on their cars they are getting less exercise and have become more sedentary which is another threat to human sustainability.

I encourage everyone out there to think globally and look at the BIG picture and be a part of the change we so desperately need.
