Go to college, learn about sustainability

Posted: Friday, February 15th, 2008

The University of Wisconsin has been incorporating sustainability into their school programs, because they are aware of the need for young people with that knowledge. Our economy cannot ignore the fact that global sustainability is an integral component in successful business. Every industry will need to adjust the way they do business to accommodate sustainabilty, and the place to start is at the college level.

When I was registering for this semester’s classes I couldn’t help but notice the increase in class offerings with a central theme of sustainability.  There were business and economics courses along with interior design and textile and apparel courses that focused on sustainable materials, fair trade business, and environmental economics.

We also have the Gaylord Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies that was created in 1970 to promote interdisciplinary environmental instruction, research, and outreach at UW-Madison. They offer an Environmental Studies Certificate Program for undergrads to complete while working on their major area of study.

The reason for this post is that as I am looking around online I’m noticing many schools that are creating programs around sustainability. The London College of Fashion is launching a Centre for Sustainable Fashion and as I find the other schools again I will post their info.
