Organic Meat for Those who Eat

Posted: Sunday, March 9th, 2008

For those of you who live in Madison and want to eat meat, but without all the antibiotics, steroids, growth hormones, and anything else that goes into an animal before and after it is slaughtered, there are many retail options to find organic or naturally raised meats. I haven’t been to Artamos’ Specialty Meats and Deli yet, but I have eaten some of their products and think their store is a conscious carnivore’s delight. “All the organic meats featured at Artamos’ are free-range and raised without hormones, antibiotics and steroids. In addition, the animals are fed an all-organic vegetarian diet (no animal by-products), which is particularly important.

Other stores in Madison that carry natural meats are Whole Foods Market and Willy Street Co-op. There may be other stores than I don’t know of and I hope there are. If anyone knows of any other stores I would love to know about them. Whole Foods actually started the non-profit Animal Compassion Foundation to help farmers raise animals naturally and humanely. Humans will always want to eat meat, but I think being aware of how the animal was treated and what it ate while it was alive is a natural progression that seems to be picking up. Eating meat has serious environmental consequences in that it uses a great deal of energy and resources, is a source of water and air pollution, and is responsible for mass clear-cutting in third world countries.
